A woman named Diane sat down with me after a frustrating two years of dating.
Smart. Warm. Genuinely beautiful. She had no shortage of first and second dates. Men liked her.
They just did not stay.
“I don’t know what I’m doing wrong,” she said. “I’m interesting. I ask good questions. I dress well. I do everything they say you’re supposed to do.”
I told her that was part of the problem.
What a man with options has already seen
A man who has dated a lot has heard interesting answers to “what do you do.”
He has had great conversations. Been charmed, and charmed back. He knows what a pleasant evening feels like.
He also knows what it feels like to get home after one of those evenings and realize he does not particularly want to see her again. Not because anything was wrong. Because nothing was quite real either.
The effort to impress has a texture. It is familiar. A woman who spent the evening being interesting blurs together with the last woman who spent an evening being interesting. What he is looking for has nothing to do with what she presented. It has everything to do with what he felt.
What he is actually looking for
A man with options is looking for ease. It is near the top of what men actually look for in a woman, and it has nothing to do with how hard she tries.
Not the ease of agreement. Not a woman who avoids friction or keeps everything smooth. The ease of being around someone who is not working at the interaction.
She is comfortable enough in her own skin that the conversation does not feel like an audition for either of them. He does not find himself choosing his words carefully or watching how she is reacting to him. He is not managing anything. Neither is she. They are just talking.
He does not arrive at this conclusion deliberately. He just notices, somewhere around the middle of the evening, that something about this is different. He is not performing. She is not performing. The conversation is going somewhere by itself.
That quality is rarer than most women realize. A man who has been on many dates has rarely felt it. When he does, he notices.
Why effort works against her
Here is what happens when she is working to stand out.
He can feel it. Not because he is analyzing her. Because when she is working to secure his attention, the room asks for performance in return. He starts performing back without deciding to. And somewhere in that careful exchange, the thing he was hoping to feel does not arrive.
He does not leave thinking she did anything wrong. He just feels a little flat. Like the evening was pleasant but somehow also beside the point.
The problem is not that she cared. The problem is that his approval was the whole purpose of the room. He could feel that his opinion was what the evening was for. A man who has been on many dates is used to being the prize. A woman who is working to win him registers as familiar. Not wrong. Not unkind. Just not particularly interesting.
What actually holds his attention
The woman who holds a quality man’s attention is doing something different.
She is warm. She is engaged. She is genuinely curious about him. But she is also clearly doing her own evaluation. He can feel that she is deciding whether he fits what she is looking for. She actually cares about the answer.
That orientation changes his position entirely. He is not the judge. He is someone who has to show her something. That is a completely different place to be, and his response is completely different.
When a quality man feels that a woman is honestly deciding whether he belongs in her life, he wants to show her that he does. He starts working. Not because she made him. Because he wants to. The same dynamic is what eventually makes a man decide she is the one.
What changed for Diane
When Diane came back a few months later, her orientation had changed.
She had stopped trying to figure out what men with options were looking for. She had started paying attention to what she was looking for.
“I went on a date last week,” she said, “and about twenty minutes in I realized I wasn’t sure he was the right fit for me. I kept going because he was interesting. But for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t trying to make him like me.”
He called her the next day.
That is what it looks like when a man moves toward a woman. Not because she did something right. Because she stopped making his opinion the whole point of the room.
If you want to understand what creates this in a man at the deeper level, The Woman Men Adore is where I cover it fully.
